Small for gestational age (SGA) is a term used to describe babies that are smaller than normal for the number of weeks of pregnancy they are in. Small for gestational age babies have birth weights below the 10th percentile. Small for gestational age may occur when the fetus does not get adequate amounts of oxygen or nutrients needed to grow and develop organs and tissues. Small for gestational age can begin at any time in pregnancy.
