What are Infectious Neuropathies?

Infectious Neuropathies
Infectious Neuropathies. Sural nerve biopsy in HCV-related anti-MAG neuropathy. Transverse semithin section showing the decreased density of myelinated fibers ((toluidine blue stain, 10x magnification, A). Paraffin-embedded sections disclosing perivascular infiltrates of lymphocytes and monocytes around epineurial arterioles and venules (haematoxylin and eosin stain, 20x magnification, (B)). Electron micrograph showinguncompacted myelin lamellae around a small remyelinating axon (C). D: Electron micrograph showing a myelinated axon with widening of external lamellae of the myelin with increased distance between major dense lines (D). HCV-related central and peripheral nervous system demyelinating disorders: Mariotto S, Ferrari S, Monaco S - Inflammation & allergy drug targets (2014). Not altered. CC.

Infectious neuropathies are neuron injuries and damage due to the presence of an infectious disease.

Examples of infectious neuropathies include:

  • Leprosy (Hansen disease) infectious neuropathy
  • Diphtheria infectious neuropathy
  • HIV/AIDS infectious neuropathy
  • Lyme disease infectious neuropathy
  • Varicella-Zoster virus infectious neuropathy
