A malformation is a non-progressive, congenital morphologic anomaly of a single organ or body part due to an alteration of the primary developmental program.

Examples of malformations include:

  • Cleft lip
  • Cleft palate
  • Congenital heart defect
  • Neural tube defects
  • Spina bifida
