An irritation fibroma is a benign scar like lesion in the mouth caused by irritation over a long period of time. An irritation fibroma is also referred to as focal fibrous hyperplasia or a traumatic fibroma. Irritation fibromas may present as an oral submucosal firm dome shaped mass. Irritation fibromas are typically benign, but treatment includes surgical excision.

Pathology

Irritation fibromas are due to reactive proliferation.

Gross: Firm nodule.

Microscopic: Nodular nonencapsulated mass composed of fibrous connective tissue consisting of collagen bundles, blood vessels, and fibroblasts.

Positive Stains: Vimentin.

Negative Stains: SMA, Desmin, CD34, S100.

Differential Diagnosis: Giant cell fibroma.

Presentation

Firm oral nodule.

Diagnosis

Made histopathologically.

Treatment

Surgical excision.

Prognosis

Great.
