A malformation syndrome is a group of congenital anomalies thought to be pathologically related to each other that cannot be explained by a single specific initial defect.

Examples of malformations include:

  • Cleft lip
  • Cleft palate
  • Down syndrome
  • Heart defects
  • Neural tube defects
  • Spina bifida
