Prematurity is defined as a gestational age less than 37 weeks. Prematurity is the second most common cause of neonatal mortality.

Risks that may cause prematurity include: Uterus issues, cervical issues, placenta issues, smoking cigarettes, drug use, diabetes, hypertension, stress, genital tract infections, amniotic fluid infections, multiple miscarriages, and physical trauma.
