Proptosis is displacement of the eye forward.

Proptosis may be due to graves disease (thyroid opthalmopathy), lacrimal gland enlargement due to inflammation, or neoplasms.

The two most common primary tumors of the optic nerve (meningioma and glioma) may cause proptosis.
